What is Living Abundantly?

Harbor House Ministries has based its mission and culture on the promise Jesus delivers in John 10:10; “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

At Harbor House, we know that Jesus’s promise is for all people.  An abundant life is not about how much you have or even how much you can do.  An abundant life is living in the love and grace of Jesus Christ and all that flows out from Him.  So, living abundantly means living with joy, purpose, grace and worship.

Harbor House Ministries offers every man and woman who lives here an opportunity to live in abundance.  The concept came from the families who founded the ministry.  They wanted their children to experience the world around them, to be a part of something larger than themselves, and to contribute to their community.

Often, neuro-typical people will lament our disabilities and even hint that somehow life must be less fulfilling for the individual who is not typical.   It’s not unlike the wealthy who assume those living in poverty are less happy in life.   The research would show otherwise.  The experiences are different, but fulfillment is not determined by wealth, and we would argue it’s not determined by physical or cognitive ability either.

At Harbor House, we work with each individual, learning how they are gifted, what they are passionate about, and what kinds of activities they enjoy.  Then, we find innovative and adaptive ways each person can participate in activities that are meaningful and fulfilling to them.

We have learned at Harbor House Ministries that an abundant life is unique to the person living it.  Living in abundance is not about achievement or even a sorrow-free life, instead it is a life where a person is fulfilled and content. Jesus came that we might be redeemed,  and from that redemption comes a life infinitely full; a life of abundance.   Our prayer for you today is that you are able to live abundantly!
